Nolan McLean, a prospect with the Mets, has given up on his goals of being a two-way player and has chosen to concentrate just on throwing. "My workload and my physical state were the primary factors," McLean clarified. "We knew it was going to be a challenge from the start with the amount of reps and how my body would hold up, and at the end of the day, I decided to prioritize focusing on pitching."
Performance and Adjustments
This change in emphasis is not wholly unexpected. Following his promotion to Double-A, McLean had struggled at the plate and hadn't played since June 20. On the mound, though, he has made great strides, giving up only four earned runs in his last three outings while sporting a 2.57 ERA.
McLean hinted that this change might be long-term, indicating a shift in his professional trajectory. This season, the Oklahoma State product has risen in organizational prospect rankings; as of right now, he is ranked No. 10 on SNY's Joe DeMayo's most recent Top 30.

DeMayo heaped praise on McLean's pitching "He has had an adjustment to the Double-A level, but he is throwing more strikes than he ever has before. Now he needs to learn to throw better strikes, as upper minors hitters have gotten to his stuff more than he’s used to. He has a big-league-ready fastball that is up to 98 mph, and a sweeper. He also throws a curve and changeup that need some development. He is a high-floor pitcher and if starting doesn't work out, he can be a two-pitch late-inning reliever. The Mets really like what they have seen from him as a starter, though."
